February Carroll County Community Spotlight: Carroll County Band Fund
This month’s non-profit spotlight is the Carroll County band fund!
The purpose of this fund is to support two major Carroll County musical organizations:
The Carroll County Jazz Ensemble which promotes the growth of interest in the arts and supports local charities for the benefit of the citizens of Carroll County.
And the Carroll Concert Band which provides a traditional large concert band experience for the citizens of Carroll County through the performance of annual concerts open to the public, summer music camp opportunities and support for the Carroll County Arts Council Musical Instrument Bank.
The band was started in 1978 and was affiliated with the Baltimore Metropolitan Musicians Union. For several years they provided free concerts during the year for the citizens of Carroll County. The concerts were supported through local businesses and the International Musicians Union Trust Fund.
Beginning sometime in the 1980’s concerts performed by the band were to support local non profit organizations such as the Symphony Society of Carroll County and the Carroll County Arts Council to help in fund raising to support those groups. In the 1990’s the bands income was used to support the costs of original compositions by noted composers of band, orchestra, chorus and jazz ensemble all county middle school and high school students of Carroll County Public Schools during a six year period. The composer also came as the director of the performance of his work. Since 2001 the bands annual concert has supported the Carroll Arts Council Musical Instrument Bank and the Summer Music Camp Scholarships program of the Carroll Concert Band. All proceeds from the concert are used to support programs for students in need of an instrument that has been refurbished or to provide partial support for students to attend summer music camps.
